Secure online shopping at Real Girls lingerie website

Zappos had some bad luck this week.  Did you get the email?  I did.  It started like this:

We are writing to let you know that there
may have been illegal and unauthorized
access to some of your customer account
information on Zappos.

Zappos is a LEADER in the internet shopping.  If a company as strong as them, who spends millions on internet security each year has a security breach, how can you feel safe and secure shopping with a small internet based company, like Real Girls.

 The reason why you can feel comfortable shopping with Real Girls
and companies like us
is because we are small businesses.

 Real Girls security starts with a secure socket layer more commonly referred to as an SSL.  This SSL feature is what allows the internet session on your computer, tablet or smartphone talk to the Real Girls website securely via encryption technology.  The company that provides Real Girls our SSL provides us with $1,000,000 in insurance in the event that their encryption system fails.  Most companies offer between $10, 000 and $100,000 in insurance, some as low as $500.  With the $1,000,000 insurance the company is backing the idea that the website security encryption will work.
-   Companies like Zappos will also have very powerful SSL systems.

 So where is the difference?

The way Real Girls processes your credit card is different than with large companies like Zappos.  When you enter your card information, that number is sent directly to the credit card processing company.  You can see it in the Real Girls Checkout process, but Real Girls NEVER sees the number.  The credit card processors notifies us that your card has been approved but never passes any credit card detail to us.  We do not store your credit card information anywhere in our system.  If we need to issue a refund, we often need to contact you for your credit card information again.

We do store names and addresses for shipping purposes on our system, which aren’t inherently dangerous or revealing sorts of information. However, to keep yourself safe when online shopping in general, we recommend following these easy guidelines.

1) Never duplicate a password.

Yes, we all do it. But you shouldn’t ever duplicate an important password for an online shopping account. All vitally important passwords (like your online banking password) should be unique and hard to guess. Many online shoppers use one password for everything, which potentially opens them up to data theft.

2) Change passwords every three to six months.

Even if your password is unique, it shouldn’t be your password forever. Mark an evening on your calendar and use that time to go through and change your important passwords just in case. Pay special attention to your banking passwords and to your Paypal account passwords.

Taking the time to do these easy things will make sure that you have a safe and happy shopping experience anywhere on the internet!

Ways to help throughout the YEAR!

It can be hard to think of anything but organizing food, decorations, and gifts this week. Today I’d like to take a quick break from all of that to highlight an amazing organization whose mission resonates with me personally.

There are lots of ways to give back during the holidays, but most involve monetary contributions. So what do you do if you don’t want to give just money, or can’t give anything monetary? VolunteerMatch.org is your answer.

Volunteer Match is a network that matches volunteers with organizations they are passionate about. Getting started is incredibly easy. Just enter your location, and then any key areas of interests. From there, Volunteer Match will show you several different organizations in your local area that need your help. As of the time of publication, there are 1855 volunteer opportunities in the Los Angeles area alone.

Some volunteer activities are a long term commitment, while others will only take an hour of your time. Either way, you’ll get out in the community and engage with a subject that you’re passionate about.

This holiday, I’ll be working in and around the Los Angeles area to help the animals, working with the schools, and beach clean-ups.  I’m also going to make an effort to do the same thing in January, as volunteers numbers tend to drop drastically after the holidays.
